Whipple named best overall presenter at Society for Vascular Nursing meeting

July 11, 2019

Graduate research assistant and PhD candidate Mary Whipple, BA, BSN, RN, received the best overall presenter award at the Society for Vascular Nursing’s 37th annual conference.

In her presentation, Experience of a Peripheral Artery Disease Rehabilitation-Embedded Research Study During Year 1 of Medicare Reimbursement, Whipple included baseline data from her dissertation. Marsha Burt, MS/RCEP, CCRP, supervisor of Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation at Fairview Health Services, Assistant Professor Erica Schorr, PhD, RN, and Professor and Associate Dean for Research Diane Treat-Jacobson, PhD, RN, MSVM, FAAN, in the School of Nursing were co-authors on the presentation.

The session examined referral to and enrollment in a clinical supervised exercise therapy (SET) program for patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) since the 2017 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services decision to reimburse SET for beneficiaries with PAD. It also examined clinical characteristics of patients enrolled in SET and provided a descriptive comparison of this sample of patients with samples included in previously published randomized controlled trials of SET.

Whipple will complete her PhD degree in July and will begin post-doctorate work in the Division of Geriatrics in the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine this fall.
