Advancing nursing research at the Minnesota State Fair

Minnesota State Fairgoers will have the opportunity to advance nursing research by visiting the University of Minnesota’s Driven to Discover Research Facility (D2D). School of Nursing faculty will be conducting studies ranging from how kids feel about their lives and their physical activity to concerns about vaccines and correlations between cognitive function and physical fitness.
D2D allows researchers to reach a more diverse pool of participants and meet recruitment goals in a matter of hours or days. The Great Minnesota Get-Together will be held Aug. 26-Sept. 6. The Driven to Discover Research Facility is located at 1367 Cosgrove St. on the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.

Assistant Professor Robin Austin, PhD, DNP, DC, RN-BC, Clinical Associate Professor Sripriya Rajamani, PhD, MPH, MBBS, FAMIA, and Professor Karen Monsen, PhD, RN, FAMIA, FAAN, will be administering MyStrengths+MyHealth, which is a whole-person assessment used to understand what you think of your own strengths, challenges, and needs related to health. MyStrengths+MyHealth seeks to understand all aspects of health including the physical and social environments in which we live and our physical health.

Clinical Professor Mary Benbenek, PhD, APRN, FNP-BC, CPNP-PC, FAANP, will be asking questions about vaccines. Are you likely to get vaccines or not? If you have children do you or will you vaccinate them? What concerns, if any, do you have about vaccines?

Tip Top Kids
Professor Wendy Looman, PhD, APRN, CPNP-PC, wants to know how kids are feeling about their life in general, and how much this changes over time. She will be asking teens and kids to draw a line to show us the ups and downs of their quality of life over the past year, and to answer a few survey questions about how they think and feel in general.

Aging in Motion
PhD student Russell Spafford, MS, Assistant Professor Dereck Salisbury, PhD, and Co-investigator Assistant Professor Lisiane Pruinelli, PhD, RN, FAMIA are conducting a study to evaluate the mechanisms underlying the relationships among diet, cognitive, physical, and emotional wellbeing in adults 55+. The study will also server as a recruitment event for The ACT Trial and Exergame Study led by PI Dereck Salisbury, PhD and iBAM research led by Laura Niedernhoffer, MD, PHD
