Two University of Minnesota Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students were elected to statewide leadership positions within the Minnesota Student Nurses’ Association (MSNA). Junior Jon Nghiem was elected MSNA director of communications and sophomore Julianne Pekala was elected Breakthrough to Nursing Committee chair.

The two were selected at the conclusion of the MSNA annual convention hosted by the University of Minnesota at the student union on Feb. 16. More than 150 students attended the annual event for pre-licensure nursing students that included speakers, panels, breakout sessions and a career fair.

"We're incredibly proud to have to have Jon and Julie elected to state positions," said Associate Professor Susan O'Conner-Von, PhD, RN, who serves as faculty adviser. "I can't recall the last time two students were chosen in the same year and that's a testament to their strong leadership skills and passion for nursing."
