Improving Diagnoses in Health Care

Julia Berg's Story

Julia Berg was 15 when she died unexpectedly during a hospitalization for a condition that was misdiagnosed. Her parents Dan Berg and Welcome Jerde share their family's experience of Julia’s illness and death, and their journey through grief in the years since this experience. They offer recommendations for how the healthcare team can support families during diagnostic uncertainty and unexpected loss. The video and accompanying resources are designed to support professional development and reflection in the areas of ethics, diagnostic error, uncertainty, family grief, family centered care, and interprofessional team care. The module is suitable for interprofessional teams, health care students and providers.
