Program Guidelines

Program Guidelines

  • This program is intended to offer informal peer-to-peer support for of children who are seen at the University of Minnesota’s Cleft & Craniofacial Clinics.
  • Initial contact will be made by the Support Parent as soon as possible, following notification of the match from clinic staff members.
  • We will do our best to match you with an individual with similar availability. However, you and your matched parent should address the topic of availability and contact boundaries (i.e., no calls after 10 PM).
  • An agreement should be made between the mentor & mentee parents regarding frequency, method, and context of interaction.
  • The Connecting Smiles program is not intended to be a source of specific medical advice. You should contact your child’s medical team to discuss any questions or concerns related to your child’s health and plan of care.
  • It is your right to end a parent-to-parent relationship at anytime. Please communicate this decision with either your match or the clinic
  • You may also wish to “break” from the relationship, should other commitments warrant your attention. This is ok! We appreciate that life gets busy, we just ask that you communicate your wishes with your match or the clinic.
  • We will send out periodic follow-up surveys via email. Within these surveys you are able to indicate the success of your match. If you do not feel that your match is appropriate, please indicate so in the survey. We will do our best to offer you an alternative match in a timely manner.
  • Information shared among families may not reflect the views of the clinic
  • Eligible mentors will be required to complete a one-day orientation and training with clinic staff prior to program participation.
  • In the case of high demand, you may be placed on a waiting list. If this is the case, you will be notified by a clinic coordinator.
