Technical Standards (due July 14)

Technical Standards (due July 14)

This is a broad degree unique in that the graduates are prepared, and upon licensure, are allowed to provide nursing care to individuals, families, communities, and populations that is within the scope of Registered Nurse practice under state law. This requires that the student in the curriculum acquire didactic (classroom) knowledge as a well as learn skills and attitudes essential to the profession and agreed upon by the faculty as requisite for the practice of professional nursing. The student is required to have both cognitive and technical abilities to negotiate this curriculum. In the process of this curriculum, the student is required to direct or perform treatment on patients of the School's affiliates. The School has the responsibility of insuring the safety of the patients, which includes the completion of safe and timely treatment. To that end, the student must be able to meet the School of Nursing Minimum Technical Standards for Admissions and Matriculation with or without reasonable accommodation.

If you have questions regarding potential reasonable accommodations, please contact Disability Services at 612 626-1333 or ds@umn.edu

A University of Minnesota School of Nursing students are required to acknowledge they are able to meet the technical standards fully with or without accomodations. If fulfilling the technical standards are in question, it is highly recommended to receive documentation from a healthcare provider (nurse practitioner or physician) either prior or during the program.

Please read the Technical Standards. If you are able to complete the program with or without reasonable accomodations, please complete the online Technical Standards Acknowledgement Form below.

Technical Standards Form - submit by July 14th.

Registering for classes

Registering for classes

Registering for classes

Students at the University of Minnesota register for courses online through their MyU Portal.  Please use the link below to access helpful tutorials and  information to begin familiarizing yourself with the registration system.

Registration Tutorials and How-To Guides

Course Registration: Students in the MN program will receive specific instructions as to which course and section you are supposed to register for each term. It is very important that you adhere to this as sections have been specifically reserved for individual students. The information will be sent to your U of MN email account. DO NOT REGISTER until you receive this information. There are enough spaces reserved for our students in each required class, so there is no danger of being closed out of a course.

Stethoscopes, scrubs, and shoes

Stethoscopes, scrubs, and shoes

Please read the information below regarding materials and scrubs for the Master of Nursing program.

Scrubs:

  • Are required and must be ordered from the University of Minnesota Bookstore.
  • Color is automatically determined (maroon) – you need to select the size.
  • Required: One pair (top and bottom); Note: you will be required to wear scrubs to your clinical sites as well as in your lab, so you may want to purchase an extra pair of scrubs.
  • Optional: Lab coat. In some settings, business professional attire + lab coat may be suitable alternative to scrubs – check with your instructors for details.

Shoes: For safety purposes, shoes should not be sandals or have open toes or heels. It is good practice to wear shoes in the clinical area exclusively in clinical due to the potential exchange of bacteria/viruses between environments. Shoes worn with scrubs should be primarily white shoes with no advertisement (inconspicuous logos are acceptable such as the Nike swoosh), with white socks. Clogs, sandals, with holes, open-toed or open-heeled shoes or canvas tennis shoes are NOT appropriate.

Stethoscope: A stethoscope that has both a bell and a diaphragm is necessary. This information should be clearly indicated on the product info. A typical first stethoscope is the Littmann Classic II S.E. It is available at the University of Minnesota Bookstore, but it is your choice if and where you purchase a stethoscope.
