First University of Minnesota Nurses' Clinic Treats Aliment Sufferers are Reluctant to Discuss
MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL (December 6, 2005) - The problem of urinary incontinence plagues 34 million Americans, including one in four women. Even though it diminishes their health, functioning and quality of life, many don't report it, either because they consider it a normal part of aging, are embarrassed, or fear they will have to have surgery. Now the University of Minnesota School of Nursing has opened a continence care clinic for women, offering a wide range of effective, non-surgical treatments.

Roxanne Struthers Passes Into the Spirit World
(Minneapolis, MN, December 12, 2005) - Roxanne Struthers, Assistant Professor at the School of Nursing, died Saturday evening of acute lymphocytic leukemia. Her teaching and research focused on American Indian/Alaskan Native health and health care, holistic care for indigenous women and indigenous traditional healing.

Nurse Scientist Shows Link Between School Food Practices and Student Obesity
Minneapolis/St. Paul (November 21, 2005) - Do schools contribute to childhood obesity? That could be the case, according to a new study led by University of Minnesota School of Nursing researcher Martha Kubik. The findings appear in the December issue of the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

School Receives $1.5 Million Federal Grant
(Minneapolis, MN, November 29, 2005) - A $1.5 million federal grant will help the University of Minnesota School of Nursing intensify its focus on interventions that protect, maintain and restore health from infancy to old age. Since nursing is uniquely about helping people and families stay healthy in the context of their own communities and environments, nurse scientists are leaders in this field of research. The National Institute of Nursing Research, which is part of the National Institutes of Health, made the five-year award.

Kreitzer Inducted Into American Academy of Nursing
Minneapolis/ St. Paul (November 12, 2005) - In recognition of her expertise and leadership in the field of complementary therapies and healing practices, School of Nursing Associate Professor and Center for Spirituality and Healing Director Mary Jo Kreitzer, PhD, RN, today was inducted as a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. The Academy is comprised of 1,500 distinguished nursing leaders who are among the most influential in the profession and within healthcare. The induction ceremony took place at the Academy's annual conference in Phoenix.

Bliss Appointed Director of International Nursing Research Society
(Minneapolis, MN, October 10, 2005) - School of Nursing faculty member Donna Zimmaro Bliss, PhD, RN, FAAN, has been appointed director of the research arm of the leading professional association specializing in the management and rehabilitation of persons with wounds, ostomies and continence disorders, the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses Society (WOCN).

President Bruininks Proposes Health Sciences Center for Allied Health Programs

University of Minnesota to Help Communities Prepare for Public Health and Bio-Terrorism Emergencies
Minneapolis /St. Paul (October 10, 2005) - The University of Minnesota School of Nursing and the School of Public Health have received a $2.7 million federal grant to educate and train healthcare workers in emergency preparedness, tailoring efforts to the unique needs of specific Minnesota communities as they prepare for a public health emergency or bio-terrorism event.

School to Offer Scholarships in Advanced Geriatrics
