Beginning July 1, 2004, the University of Minnesota School of Nursing began offering a new Nurse Anesthesia Area of Study. Founded on the experiences of a long and successful partnership between the School of Nursing and the Minneapolis VA School of Anesthesia, the Nurse Anesthesia Area of Study is strengthened by the contributions of both institutions.
Application
The nurse anesthesia area of study is 24 months in length, and a new class of 10 students is admitted each summer. Applications for the class beginning Summer 2008 (Summer session) are due August 1, 2007. Applicants must have at least one year of critical care nursing experience (adult SICU preferred) before starting the program. In addition to the other required documents, application to the nurse anesthesia area of study requires the submission of three (3) additional clinical references from individuals who are familiar with the applicant's clinical work. Curriculum
The nurse anesthesia curriculum integrates didactic classes with clinical experience beginning the first semester. With the Minneapolis VA Medical Center serving as the primary clinical site, students rotate to several urban and rural clinical sites, learning to perform all general and regional techniques. Upon completion of the MS degree, graduates from the nurse anesthesia area of study are eligible to take the National Certification Exam administered by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists.
