About the Course

Students must enroll in and successfully complete the 2-3 credit course "Cultural Immersion Service Learning in Public Health" in the spring semester, 2012.  The course is internet delivered and includes 5 total modules, with approximately 2 weeks to complete each module.  At the end of the semester, students will travel to Canada or Mexico, from the end of May and through June.  In Mexico, Spanish classes (at various levels, including medical Spanish) will be held the first two weeks.  In Canada, English will be the language used.

Course Description
Compare public health systems and population health approaches to management of chronic illness, specifically diabetes across North American countries. Prepare for culturally competent nursing at the international level through a Service Learning experience, exchanging faculty and students across Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

The Service Learning experience will include participation in projects that are public health based.  Students will not provide nursing care to clients.

Expenses
Expenses covered include travel, home stays, language school, and allowance for meals.  Additional purchases are the student's responsibility.
