  • 1909 Bertha Erdmann appointed Superintendent of Nurses.

  • The Minnesota School of Nursing was the first school in the country based in a university. The school has operated continuously since March 1909.

  • Katharine Densford was the first woman to give the Cap and Gown Day (honors convocation) address at the University in May, 1959, at the time of School of Nursing’s 50th Anniversary celebration.

  • 1939 Powell Hall was the first university building named for a living person? Louise M. Powell was the second director of the school.
  • 1943 The WK Kellogg Foundation supported a program that delivered nursing services to rural Minnesota. Over the years, the school has been a national leader in delivery of care to people in rural areas.
  • 1943 During World War II, the school of nursing trained the largest group of military nurses in the country. Through the US Cadet Nurse Corps, 1215 nurses were prepared.
    Four men were first admitted to the school in 1949, about 10 years ahead of the rest of the nation. At the time there were 6 men in the state who were RNs.
  • In 1954 the school established a working relationship with Seoul National University that still exists today. The school faculty assisted in the rehabilitation of nursing education after the Korean War.
  • Elva Walker Spillane was the first president of the School of Nursing Foundation that was established by Katharine Densford in 1958 as an independent foundation. The school was one of the first in the country to have its own foundation.
  • 1959 Edna L. Fritz appointed Director of the School of Nursing.
  • 1959 School of Nursing celebrated its 50th Anniversary.
  • 1961-65 Transition to students no longer providing nursing service to the hospital in exchange for room and board.
  • 1962 Students no longer required to live in Powell Hall.
  • 1969 Isabel Harris appointed Dean of the School of Nursing.
  • 1970 School becomes independent from Medical School
  • 1975 Irene G. Ramey appointed Dean of the School of Nursing.
  • 1978 First annual Nursing Research Day sponsored by the School of Nursing
  • 1978 Department of Health and Human Services provided funding to develop the Research Office in the School of Nursing
  • 1980 Doctoral program proposal submitted to Graduate School
  • 1980 Ellen T. Fahy appointed Dean of the School of Nursing.
  • 1981 School moves to Unit F
  • 1981 School of Nursing launches first Doctoral program
  • 1983 First PhD program established in the state of Minnesota at the School of Nursing
  • 1986 The National Center for Nursing Research is established within the National Institute of Health (NIH)
  • 1988 Judith Graves became the first National Library of Medicine trained nurse informatician.
  • 1990 Sandra R. Edwardson appointed Dean of the School of Nursing.
  • Since 1990, the School of Nursing has been a national leader in research for long term care of the elderly.
  • Beginning in 1990 gerontology nurse specialists were prepared and federal research monies obtained.
  • 1990 Exploratory Center for Long-Term Care established through funded by the Center for Nursing Research in NIH
  • 1991 The first nurse-led and inter-professional research was conducted on home monitoring of lung transplant patients at the School of Nursing
  • 1993 The National Center of Nursing Research is elevated to an Institute within NIH and named the National Institute of Nursing Research
  • 1998 Katharine J. Densford International Center for Nursing Leadership established. $3 million endowment from
  • 1998 Center for Child and Family Health Promotion Research and the Center for Child and Family Health Promotion Research launched.
  • 1998 Katharine J. Densford International Center for Nursing Leadership established. $3 million endowment from Katherine Lillehei supports the Director for the Center.
  • 1997 Unit F renamed Weaver- Densford Hall
  • 2000 to the present Emergence of contemporary nursing programs such as the post-baccalaureate – now the professional masters’, and the DNP.
  • 2001 Ranked 14th nationally in NIH funding for Schools of Nursing
  • 2002 The School of Nursing formed the first interdisciplinary Center for Spirituality and Healing. The Center offers a minor in complementary therapies and healing practices, and became an NIH designated developmental center in 2005.
  • 2005 Connie Delaney appointed Dean of the School of Nursing.
  • 2005 Minnesota Center for Health Trajectory Research launched with a $1.5 million NINR grant with Jean Wyman as Director
  • 2005 The Center for Health Trajectory Research was established with funding from the National Institute of Nursing Research and the National Institute of Health within the school
  • 2006 First MS graduates from Native Nurses Career Opportunity Program (NNCOP) (scholarship program in collaboration with DHHS-Indian Health Services)
  • 2007 Clinical Track for faculty introduced to emphasize nursing education and practice.
  • 2007 Funding for nursing led research increased by 300% since 1995
  • 2009 36 School of Nursing faculty members are participating on 48 federal grants
