Individuals may complete the Registration Request for Graduate Credit (for non-degree students) form to register for selected graduate-level courses at the University of Minnesota. You can use this process to request enrollment in graduate-level nursing courses prior to admission to the University of Minnesota, School of Nursing Graduate Program. You may also use this process to request enrollment in graduate-level nursing courses for professional development or personal enrichment. You must have a completed bachelor's degree to be eligible for enrollment in graduate courses.

For complete, up-to-date information on registering for Graduate Credit as a non-degree student including eligibility, limitations, advantages, and FAQs, view http://onestop.umn.edu/onestop/img/assets/9061/PRDWebBrochure.pdf. The information is provided by the Office of the Registrar.

You may register for any of the nursing courses listed below, provided you meet the prerequisites for the courses. Non-degree students must obtain the instructor's consent and permission number to register for Nursing courses. Contact the instructor directly to request a "permission number." The School of Nursing allows no more than 9 credits of nursing graduate coursework taken as a non-degree student to be applied to the nursing graduate degree program. Coursework taken as a non-degree student may or may not be accepted by a graduate program at another institution, depending on the policies of that institution.

In addition, the Graduate School considers all non-degree coursework to be transfer work. For a master's program, the Graduate School permits no more than 40% of the coursework on the master's degree program to be transfer work. For the Ph.D. program, no more than 12 credits of non-degree coursework on the program form may be transfer work. (See the Graduate School Catalog for more detailed information: http://www.grad.umn.edu.)

Application Process

  1. Complete the Registration Request for Graduate Credit (for non-degree students) form; download the form from the OneStop Forms Online website at http://onestop.umn.edu/onestop/img/assets/9061/RequestforGraduateCredit.pdf.

  2. Check the Class Schedule for course availability. On the World Wide Web, go to http://onestop.umn.edu. Click on "Registration." Then click on "Class Schedule." This will bring up a list of academic terms. Click on the term for which you wish to access information, e.g., Spring 2005. Scroll to Nursing. (Courses are listed according to the department that is offering them, so you must select the appropriate department to find a course in the on-line Class Schedule.) Click on "View." The courses offered for the term you selected will be listed.

  3. View prerequisites and class availability information on the online Class Schedule for the course you are interested in taking. Note the "class number" for that course. The class number is the six-digit number on the left-hand side of the screen next to the check box--e.g., 13888. Each section of a course has its own class number, so write down the correct number for the section of the course for which you will register. (The class number is not the four-digit course number.)

Example of a Course listing in the on-line Class Schedule:

Nurs 8100 The Discipline of Nursing
(SP - Grad nurs major or instr consent)
    88664 -001 SEM 3 cr, 5 seat(s) reserved for non-admitted students, 40 of 40 seats open

    Key: Nurs = designator, 8100 = Course number, 88664 = Class number, -001 = section number

  4. Complete the Registration Request for Graduate Credit (for non-degree students) form. Indicate the class number (from the Class Schedule), the course designator and number, the course title, the section of the course, the grade-base (A-F or S/N) and if required, the permission number. Permission numbers are issued only by the instructor of a course. To get an instructor's phone and e-mail, use the "Search for People" option on http://www.onestop.umn.edu. (Remember: Non-degree students may only register for the courses listed above.) Complete the optional fees box. Sign the form. Registration can be delayed if the form is incomplete.

  5. Send the form to the address below as soon as you have completed it. Please do not submit the form to another department or office on campus. Non-degree students' registration forms are not processed by the Office of the Registrar (OTR) until the "open registration" period. Forms may be submitted before open registration begins, but OTR will not be processed the forms until open registration. (Completion of the Registration Request for Graduate Credit (for non-degree students) form does not guarantee enrollment in a course. Courses can close between the time a student submits the form and the time it is processed.) A special permission number granted by the course instructor does guarantee a student space in the course. Submit to:

    School of Nursing
    University of Minnesota
    Non-degree Enrollment
    5-160 Weaver-Densford Hall
    308 Harvard Street SE

For questions, contact the School of Nursing Office of Student Services at 612-624-4454 or nurseoss@umn.edu.

  6. The School of Nursing staff will review, sign, and send the Registration Request for Graduate Credit (for non-degree students) form to the U of M Office of the Registrar (OTR). OTR will process the Requests only after open registration begins and will send you a Confirmation of Registration within five days of processing your Request. If the course has closed, OTR will contact you and advise you about how to proceed. You will be billed by email, after the term has started.

The UM Pay electronic billing and payment system will automatically send an e-mail notification to the student's U of M e-mail address when the bill is ready to be viewed online. Students will need their U of M Internet ID and password to login to the UM Pay system. For more information on UM Pay, go to http://onestop.umn.edu/onestop/Tuition_Billing/UM_Pay.html or contact One Stop Student Services at 612-624-1111.

  7. If you have registered for an online course, please contact the instructor for information about access and requirements for the course. You may familiarize yourself with the format and tools of online courses by accessing an online tutorial, view http://webct.umn.edu. Go to "Use the University's WebCT Tutorial" under "Student Support" and follow the prompts. Activation of online course websites occurs shortly before the start of the term.
