TOEFL Test Scores

English Language Proficiency

If your native language is not English, you are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and provide a minimum TOEFL score of 586 (or 240 on computer-based TOEFL) to be reviewed for the School of Nursing M.S. program.

You are exempt from taking the TOEFL if you are an applicant whose native language is not English and you will have completed 24 quarter credits (16 semester credits) in residence as a full-time student at a recognized institution of higher learning in the United States before entering the University of Minnesota. These transfer students, however, may be asked to take locally-administered English tests after arriving on campus. A TOEFL score of 586, or the computer-based TOEFL score of 240, demonstrates acceptable English proficiency.

Information is available on the TOEFL Web site, at U.S. embassies and consulates, or by writing:

TOEFL/TSE Services
PO Box 6151
Princeton, NJ 08541-6151
USA

If the TOEFL is not available in your country, the only substitute is the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) with a score of 85. Information about the MELAB is available at the MELAB web site or by writing:

English Language Institute
MELAB Testing
3020 North University Building
University of Michigan
Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1057

Applicants must have a minimum score of 586 or 240 (computer-based) on the TOEFL or a score of 85 on the MELAB to be reviewed for the School of Nursing M.S. Program.
