Nursing Researchers to Study Incontinence
MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (Nov. 29, 2004) - Incontinence affects millions of Americans, but often goes untreated because it is embarrassing for the patient and poorly understood, even among health providers. A synthesis of research on the topic, Shaping Future Directions for Incontinence Research, will appear November 2004 in the first-ever supplement to the highly respected journal Nursing Research. Published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, it reports on an international invitational summit convened in October 2003 by the Center for Gerontological Nursing at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing as part of the John A. Hartford Foundation Geriatric Nursing Initiative Program.

Nursing School Receives $2.6 Million CDC Grant
(Oct. 14, 2004) - Adolescents have numerous health-related issues and problems, but they often remain unmet. University of Minnesota School of Nursing faculty hope to change that with the help of a $2.58 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is the only school of nursing to receive one of these CDC grants under a new Health Protection Research Initiative.

Summit of Sages Conference
Minneapolis/St. Paul (October 5, 2004) - Nurse leaders from the U.S. and abroad, determined to strengthen the voice of nursing in health care discussions, are meeting in the Twin Cities next week. The conference, A Summit of Sages, is hosted by the University of Minnesota School of Nursing and its Katharine J. Densford International Center for Nursing Leadership. It will take place October 10-12 at the Saint Paul Hotel, 350 Market St., St. Paul, MN.

Mario Cuomo to Keynote
MINNEAPOLIS/ST.PAUL (October 5, 2004) - Is care going out of style? Is it being eclipsed by health industry economics? If so, what does that mean for nurses? and those of us they care for? Former New York Governor Mario Cuomo will address the question in a keynote address, "The Paradox of Caring in Uncaring Times," at a national conference of nurse leaders in the Twin Cities October 10.

First Students Graduate From Rochester Satellite
MINNEAPOLIS, MN (June 18, 2004) - The first students to enroll in the University of Minnesota School of Nursing's satellite program in Rochester will graduate at 2:00 p.m. today in ceremonies at the Ted Mann Concert Hall in Minneapolis.

Nursing Alumna Wins U Leadership Award
(April 27, 2004) - A University of Minnesota School of Nursing alumna, Hyeoun Ae Park, Ph.D., M.S.N., M.S., has received one of the University's prestigious Leadership Award for Internationals. The award recognizes international alumni, former students and friends of the University who have distinguished themselves in their post-university work as leaders in their professional careers awarded.

Nursing Study to Examine Hearing Loss in Latino Construction Workers
(April 6, 2004) - Madeleine Kerr, Ph.D., R.N., a researcher at the School of Nursing, has received nearly $200,000 a year for each of three years in grants from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communications Disorders (NIDCD), a part of the National Institutes of Health.

Nursing Research Explores School Violence
(Feb. 24, 2004) - Research at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing may help schools become safer environments for adolescents. In a five-year project funded by the National Institutes of Health, Elizabeth Saewyc, R.N., P.H.N., Ph.D., associate professor in the School of Nursing's Center for Adolescent Nursing, will study how some students are stigmatized, are targeted for violence at school, and engage in risky behaviors such as drug use.

Cynthia Peden-McAlpine will be one of this year's recipients of the Awards for Outstanding Contributions to Post-baccalaureate, Graduate and Professional Education.
