Merrie Kass, Nancy Dillon and Penny Hogberg interviewed by Medscape Medical News

Associate Professor, Merrie Kass, DNSc, APRN,CS-BC and colleagues Nancy Dillon, PhD, RN, CNS and Penny Hogberg, CTRS were interviewed by Medscape Medical News regarding their recent research on treatment models for illness management and recovery (IMR). This evidence-based program was designed to help patients with mental illness develop the skills and resources they need to cope effectively with symptoms and to maintain independence. The goals were to improve patients' recovery from their mental illness and to empower them to direct their care by encouraging them to set personal functional goals and choosing methods to meet these goals. Implementation of IMR appears to improve patients' perceptions of the control they have over their recovery from their mental illness. The results from this study also suggests patients who are not ready to make lifestyle changes to improve their recovery do not improve as much as patients who are ready to make lifestyle changes in perceptions of recovery.
