Disch Receives 2007 President's Award from the American Academy of Nursing

Photo of Dr. Joanne  DischJoanne Disch, PhD, RN, FAAN, along with nursing colleague Karlene Kerfoot, PhD, RN, CNAA, FAAN, was awarded the 2007 American Academy of Nursing Presidential Award at the Academy’s 34th annual conference on November 10. The award was given in recognition of their creation of "Raise the Voice," an innovative and inspirational national campaign to transform the current system of healthcare delivery through nursing solutions.  This program embodies the mission and vision of the Densford International Center for Nursing Leadership as it provides concrete examples for the public and policy makers of care options, created by nurses, that result in patient-centered, affordable and integrated patient care – and enhances the Center’s visibility internationally.

Dr. Disch is Professor and Director of the Katharine J. Densford International Center for Nursing Leadership, and holds the Katherine R. and C. Walton Lillehei Chair in Nursing Leadership at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing. She has extensive experience as an educator, chief nurse executive, leader, researcher, policy maker and spokesperson.

In April 2006, Dr. Disch was elected Chairman of the National Board of AARP, for a two-year term. Dr. Disch has also served as president of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) and president of the AACN Certification Board. She also chaired the American Nurses Association's Committee on Nursing Practice Standards and Guidelines, and the University Healthcare Consortium's Council of Chief Nurse Executives. Currently she is a contributing editor of the American Journal of Nursing, and is a member of the Board of Directors for Allina Health System. She is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.
