Nurse-Midwifery: Objectives
Objectives
Upon completion of the University of Minnesota School of Nursing Nurse-Midwifery Program the graduate, as a beginning level practitioner, will be able to:

Provide independent and competent midwifery care, according to ACNM Core Competencies, Standards for Practice, Code of Ethics;

Practice interdependently with other members of the health care team in providing and evaluating health care;

Practice collaboratively with the physician in the care of clients with medical and/or obstetrical complications;

Assume the role and responsibilities of the nurse-midwife which includes the following:

Provide culturally sensitive and competent care;

Provide leadership in the role of nurse-midwifery;
-
Promote evidenced-based practice;
-
Evaluate practice through research;
-
Participate in formal and informal quality assurance programs;
-
Identify current health legislation and influence legislative initiatives affecting women and children's health care;
-
Analyze basic elements essential to the organization of health care services for women;
-
Articulate the historical development of nurse-midwifery and analyze its impact of contemporary practice.
