The Center for Nursing Infomatics is an International Classification of Nursing Practice Research and Development Center. Established in 2007 as an International Council of Nurses (ICN) Accredited Research and Development Center, the Center now serves as the umbrella structure for the following Projects:

This Center focuses on the development of nursing knowledge through the use of standardized nursing terminologies and essential minimum data sets. The ultimate goal is to improve global health by the daily use of terms that adequately reflect nursing practice. The Center is dedicated to supporting this goal through: ongoing standards development that allows for and ensures clinical information systems use of nursing terms, building clinical data sets, and the collection and use of clinical data for knowledge building. View the Center goals.

The use of standardized terms that reflect nursing practice will help nurses better understand, communicate, and measure the care they provide to patients/clients, families, communities and populations. Additionally, the inclusion and use of standardized nursing terms will greatly enhance interdisciplinary communication by providing more clarity and depth regarding the specific focus of nursing practice. Other significant benefits for the use of essential nursing data include a greatly enhanced ability to: conduct cost-benefit analysis of nursing care, health care research and policy need determination.
