Faculty Learning About Geriatrics Program (FLAG)

The Minnesota Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence (MnHCGNE) is funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation and is dedicated to advancing the care of older adults by preparing outstanding nursing faculty from diverse backgrounds who can provide leadership in strengthening geriatric nursing at all levels of academic nursing programs. The Upper Midwest Geriatric Nursing Education Alliance has been initiated to strengthen the teaching of geriatric nursing in associate and higher degree nursing programs in Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Tribal Colleges.

An innovative faculty development program - Faculty Learning About Geriatrics (FLAG) - will be launched in August of 2008. This program is designed for faculty in the Alliance schools (associate and higher degree nursing programs), doctoral nursing students, and advanced practice nurses who want to develop or increase their expertise in teaching geriatric nursing.

The one-year program includes:

  • 5 day institute August 4-8, 2008 at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus
  • Access to online modules related to geriatric nursing, teaching/learning, informatics, and educational leadership as well as other online resources.
  • Mentorship that facilitates achievement of an individualized professional development plan
  • Joining an ongoing network of nurses with expertise in geriatric nursing education

When an applicant is selected to participate in the FLAG Program, they become a FLAG Fellow. Participation in the year long program is free, however enrollment is limited. A travel stipend is provided to FLAG Fellows living outside of a 50-mile radius of the University of Minnesota. Breakfast and lunches are provided. The deadline for submitting an application is April 15, 2008.

Please proceed HERE to apply for the 2008 FLAG Program.

If you have any questions on this process please call (612)626-2473 for more information. Thank you.
