Upcoming August 2011 Doctoral Education Workshop

“Doctoral Education: Why Me? Why Now?” workshop on August 25 will provide nurses with information and assistance in making decisions about and applying for doctoral education programs in nursing will provide nurses with information and assistance in making decisions about and applying for doctoral education programs in nursing.

The American Association of College Nursing (AACN) has identified the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree as the appropriate degree for advanced practice nursing. The current trend is that the DNP degree will replace the master's degree as the basic educational preparation for advanced practice nurses (APNs), including nurse practitioners (NPs) and clinical nurse specialists (CNSs). The Doctor of Philosophy Degree (PhD) in nursing prepares nursing professionals to pursue a career in nursing research. Both the DNP and PhD require a commitment to advancing the nursing profession either through practice, research, or both.

To better prepare nurse leaders amidst this changing landscape, the University of Minnesota School of Nursing’s faculty and academic counselors will host a free one-day workshop on August 25, 2011 in St. Cloud, MN for individuals interested in pursuing a nursing doctoral degree. Doctoral Education: Why Me? Why Now? will be presented at the Windfeld Room (lower level), CentraCare Health Plaza, 1900 CentraCare Circle from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

For more information on this workshop, please click HERE for press release.

The Minnesota Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence is excited to announce their third annual Summer Salon Series. Summer Salons are casual events that interested doctoral students can attend to gain information about our doctoral programs, clarify the difference between the PhD and DNP, and the career opportunities upon completing either degree. Faculty, current doctoral students, and staff are available at each salon to answer questions whether it is about the application process, how to answer the essay section of the application, deciding whether the PhD or DNP is the best fit, preparing for the GRE, research assistantships, or scholarship opportunities. The summer salon series is geared to encompass the complete spectrum of individuals interested in doctoral study whether you have considered doctoral study but are not sure it is for you, or if you know you are applying for the Fall 2011 deadlines but would like further information and want to meet with faculty and current students to get a feel for the culture at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing.
