Geriatric Nursing Teaching Resources
NURSING CARE OF OLDER ADULTS: FACULTY TEACHING RESOURCES Introduction Older adults are the core population for health care services in the United States. They make up 48% of hospital patients, 80% of home care patients, and 90% of nursing home residents. Today, more than 35 million Americans are over the age of 65, but by 2030, this number will double! Newly licensed nurses report that their older patients currently make up 62.5% of their patients (Wendt, 2003). Nursing students need to be competent in caring for older adults - those who are hospitalized; those who receive both community and institutional based long-term care services; and those who are independent and healthy. Faculty in schools of nursing have many opportunities to teach nursing students about nursing care for older adults, particularly in courses such fundamentals, mental health and illness, public and community health, adult health, pharmacology, nutrition, and leadership and management. Our geriatric nursing teaching resource website is a resource to faculty teaching in those courses. The website is organized by topics that are relevant to nursing care of older adults. For example, if a class session in the Public Health Nursing course is on substance abuse as a public health issue, the faculty teaching that class session could seek resources relevant to substance abuse and older adults by using this website.
