Clinical Teaching in Nursing Homes
A three year project, Developing Exemplary Clinical Education Partnerships and Learning in Nursing Homes has been awarded by the Health Resource Services Administration (HRSA) to the University of Minnesota, School of Nursing. It is coordinated with the Minnesota Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence and expands on the development and dissemination of resources to strengthen geriatric nursing in associate and baccalaureate degree programs with a focus on clinical teaching in nursing homes.
Primary objectives of this project include: - Develop, implement, and evaluate geriatric nursing clinical experiences in nursing homes for schools of nursing in Minnesota, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota, and the Tribal Communities.
- Facilitate partnerships between schools of nursing and nursing homes that support genuine working relationships and shared commitment to strengthen, and, in many cases initiate professional nurse practice models in nursing homes that are serving as clinical education sites.
- Create and disseminate a series of web-based modules that broadly promotes clinical teaching and student experiences based on a professional nursing practice model in nursing homes.
Strategies to implement these objectives include integration of content for teaching geriatric nursing in a nursing home through the existing Faculty Learning about Geriatrics (FLAG) program and workshops in regions of the Upper Midwest Geriatric Nursing Education Alliance which will bring schools of nursing and nursing home staff together as partners to develop exemplary clinical learning experiences for students in nursing homes. Web-based modules on clinical teaching in nursing homes will be disseminated to faculty in all schools of nursing in the U.S.
