Enhancing Geriatric Nursing Education

The Minnesota Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence (MnHCGNE) addresses the critical need for nurses with expertise in caring for older adults by preparing outstanding nursing faculty to teach geriatric nursing in associate and higher degree programs in the Upper Midwest and tribal colleges. We do so through four initiatives:

The Hartford Geriatric Nursing Education Scholars Program offers life-changing career development and financial support to doctor of nursing practice (DNP) and doctor of philosophy (PhD) students who intend to focus their graduate studies on the nursing care of older adults and engage in an academic career committed to teaching geriatric nursing.

The FLAG Program is an innovative faculty development program  for new and existing faculty to enhance their expertise in teaching geriatric nursing.

The Upper Midwest Geriatric Nursing Education Alliance links associate degree and higher nursing schools with each other to promote excellence in geriatric nursing education.

The American Indian and Tribal College Initiative is dedicated to increasing the number of American Indian nurses pursuing clinical and academic careers in geriatric nursing and strengthening the teaching of nursing care of older adults in Tribal Colleges.

These programs are made possible by a grant from the John A. Hartford Foundation's Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity (BAGNC) program, celebrating a decade of achievement.
