Message from the Dean

photo of Dean DelaneyDear Alumni and Friends,

The School of Nursing is an exciting place. We are moving in fast-forward, developing innovative approaches that will make transformational change in nursing and our health care system.

For example, to increase our capacity to prepare the nurses of tomorrow, we recently launched the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program - the first in Minnesota and one of the first in the nation. This new, complementary, practice doctorate will prepare nurses for leadership as advanced practice nurses, clinical experts, health care executives, policy experts and informaticians. Steeped in the School of Nursing's research-intensive environment, these practitioners will also contribute exceptional depth to the teaching of nursing at schools across the state. (Did you know that our school prepares 55 percent of the nursing faculty of Minnesota's public and private schools of nursing?) This new program complements our long-standing doctor of philosophy (PhD) program, oriented to preparing researchers and nursing faculty, continues to flourish.

Another method for making transformational change is to recruit the top nursing scientists in the country. The School of Nursing must recruit research-intensive professors and associate professors to ensure the success of the University of Minnesota goal of becoming one of the top three research-intensive universities.

The last transformational effort that I will address here is the importance of using simulation to educate our students who will become the next practitioners. Innovative education simulation is a must for every nursing school.

Your support for endowed chairs, the education simulation center, as well as student scholarships will be pivotal to the School's success. Thank you for investing in the School of Nursing research, education, and practice.

Connie Delaney
Professor and Dean
