Diversity
Diversity Statement
|
The growing diversity of the nation's population underscores the need to prepare future nursing practitioners and researchers who are knowledgeable and sensitive to the population's needs. The School of Nursing seeks to admit and educate a diverse student body, both in order to enrich the students' educational experience and to prepare them to meet the health needs of a diverse society.
Student body characteristics that will enhance diversity in the school include leadership qualities, a strong work, community or public service record, special talents and interests, gender (males are underrepresented in the nursing profession), and a wide range of economic, social, racial/ethnic and geographic backgrounds.

Katharine Densford Champion For Racial Integration
Katharine Densford, Director of the School of Nursing at the University of Minnesota from 1930 to 1959, was a health care pioneer, and an internationally known nursing leader. Katharine Densford is best remembered for her contributions to organized nursing and to nursing education. From 1944 to 1948, Densford served two consecutive terms as the American Nurses Association (ANA) president. During her presidency, the association's first platform was adopted to remove the barriers against minority group nurses seeking ANA membership. The full story of her involvement in integrating the ANA is available here.
