Pediatric Palliative Care: Nurse Assessment and Management of Symptoms in Children with Life-limiting Conditions
Children with life-limiting conditions and children at the end of life commonly experience pain and other distressing symptoms such as nausea, dyspnea, and fatigue, which may go unidentified and therefore untreated. Nurses are uniquely positioned to assess, interpret, and understand the need for care, and to provide interventions of comfort, within the context of the family system. Susan O'Conner-Von, PhD, RNc and Liz Leighton, MPH (pictured left), will be working with children aged 7-12 years in the Cystic Fibrosis program and in the Pain and Palliative Care program at Children's Hospitals and Clinics in order to validate a tool that can assess symptoms in children, including symptom onset, severity, and effect on quality of life.
CRM Team Training Curriculum for Pediatric Emergencies
Helen Hansen, PhD, RN, and Karen Mathias, RN, MSN, APRN, BC (pictured right) are teaming up on a project entitled "CRM (Crisis Resource Management) Team Training Curriculum for Pediatric Emergencies." The goal of their Clinical Scholar work is to develop, test, and evaluate a state-of-the-art, in situ training curriculum for pediatric emergency teams. The updated curriculum will build upon the previous CRM training program at Children's Hospitals and Clinic of Minnesota, the TeamSTEPPS® (Strategies and Tools to Enhanace Performance and Patient Safety) Team curriculum, and the work of researchers in the field of simulation, team performance, and patient safety.
