The University of Minnesota, School of Nursing led the way and responded to our changing health care needs by introducing the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program in 2007. You can obtain your DNP degree in one of two ways based on your level of nursing preparation. The Post-Master's option is for individuals already holding a master's degree in a nursing specialty. The BSN to DNP program is for nurses who have baccalaureate or entry-level master's degrees in nursing. For nurses without prior master's degrees, the BSN to DNP program provides a streamlined curriculum with fewer credits than programs that first require completion of the master's degree followed by a post-master's program. As a result, one can complete the degree is less time and at a lower cost. The DNP grew out of recommendations from the Institute of Medicine and leaders in health care. Based on these recommendations, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing developed the concept of the DNP and recommended that by 2015 all new applicants for advanced practice certification should have a DNP degree. The DNP program at the University of Minnesota is innovative, interprofessional, and focuses on outcome-based health care. It prepares nurses to create and lead new models of care delivery for communities locally, across the nation, and around the world. You'll work with faculty who are leaders in their fields and on the cutting edge of nursing research and practice. These experts will become your mentors and guide you through the program. The unique, interdisciplinary core curriculum is divided into four areas: - DNP Core. Includes science of nursing intervention, moral and ethical positions, research, statistics, program evaluation, evidence-based practice, epidemiology, informatics, leadership, health economics, health policy, and teaching and learning
- DNP Specialty Core. Prepares students for advanced clinical practice. Includes physiology, pharmacology, pharmacotherapeutics, and advanced health assessment
- DNP Specialization. Prepares graduates for certification in their chosen specialty by a national certifying body and includes:
- Advanced clinical practice with specialty-specific courses for each of the areas of clinical specialization.
- Other specialty coursework in public health, organizational leadership, informatics, and integrative health and healing
- Scholarly Leadership Project. Completed by all students in a three-semester sequence during which the project is planned, implemented, evaluated, and presented.
