Nurse-Midwifery: Objectives

Objectives

Upon completion of the University of Minnesota, School of Nursing, Nurse-Midwifery Program the graduate, as a beginning level practitioner, will be able to:

  1. Provide independent and competent midwifery care, according to ACNM Core Competencies, Standards for Practice, Code of Ethics;
  2. Practice interdependently with other members of the health care team in providing and evaluating health care;
  3. Practice collaboratively with the physician in the care of clients with medical and/or obstetrical complications;
  4. Assume the role and responsibilities of the nurse-midwife which includes the following:
    • Provide culturally sensitive and competent care;
    • Provide leadership in the role of nurse-midwife and in the health care system;
    • Promote evidenced-based practice;
    • Evaluate practice through research;
    • Participate in formal and informal quality management programs;
    • Identify current health legislation and influence legislative initiatives affecting women and children's health care;
    • Analyze basic elements essential to the organization of health care services for women;
Articulate the historical development of nurse-midwifery and analyze its impact on contemporary practice.
