Nurse-Midwifery: Clinical Experience and Coursework
Nurse-Midwifery: Clinical Experience and Coursework, Doctor of Nursing Practice Program in the School of Nursing, University of Minnesota
The DNP program, midwifery specialty is a 3 year, 8 semester, full-time program. Four and 5 year options are also available. Nurse-Midwifery seminars and clinical courses, once begun, must be taken sequentially over five semesters. Nurse-midwifery students are required to have one year of nursing experience before beginning the clinical component of the midwifery specialty, which begins in year two of the full-time program.
The DNP course sequence begins in the fall semester; the first clinical course begins in the second year for the full-time option. Coursework and clinical practice are scheduled according to University guidelines. The clinical hours are flexible and may vary from week to week. Clinical experiences occur during days, evenings and weekends. Students are not in clinical sites during semester breaks. One clinical credit hour is equivalent to eight hours in the clinical setting.
Clinical placements occur in a variety of nurse-midwifery practices. These sites provide opportunity for students to provide care to clients of many cultures. Current clinical placements include private and public services in the Twin Cities metropolitan area (Minneapolis and St. Paul) and in several rural settings and include opportunities in neighboring states.
