The University of Minnesota School of Nursing: 1909-2009
By Laurie Glass, PhD, RN, FAAN

Leading the Way tells the remarkable history of the first century of the University of Minnesota School of Nursing, an internationally renowned school of nursing that not only has endured but also has led the way in launching a number of firsts for the profession, healthcare, and society.
It was physician, Dr. Richard Olding Beard, a professor in the Medical School, who spearheaded the school's establishment in 1909, who passionately advocated for nurses to be educated in the University rather than in the hospital-based programs of the day. |
From this remarkable beginning, the School of Nursing flourished as one of the premier schools of nursing in the country with influence around world. Faculty leaders have provided bold vision throughout every decade, whether collaborating in creating the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II or generating new knowledge through federally funded research projects; from designing the first Kardex to being the first school to offer the doctor of nursing practice degrees in informatics and one in integrative health and healing.
Leading the Way captures the spirit, creativity, challenges, and heroism of the school's faculty, staff, alumni, and students over the past one hundred years.
