Nurse Scientist Shows Link Between School Food Practices and Student Obesity

Do schools contribute to childhood obesity? That could be the case, according to a new study led by University of Minnesota School of Nursing researcher Martha Kubik. The findings appear in the December issue of the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. (Read the news release.)

Children in schools that use food as a reward or allow eating and drinking in the classroom or hallway are more likely to be overweight than kids in schools that don't allow these practices, according to a study by nursing researcher Martha Kubik. (Read the Health Talk & You article.)

Jean Wyman and Karen Dunlap, School of Nursing, along with Nancy Raymond, Bean Robinson, and Sheila Specker, Medical School, were quoted in the March 2006 Minnesota Monthly about taboo topics in women's health, including incontinence, mental illness, sexual problems, and substance abuse.
