Seminar: Using HLM to Model Trajectories: Adolescent Behavior as an Example from Developmental Science [Video] [Handouts] Presenters: Barb McMorris, PhD; Elizabeth Lando-King Date: October 22, 2009 Description: This presentation included an introduction to Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) for individual growth curve modeling, basics regarding modeling change in behavior at multiple levels, including advantages/disadvantages of this model, and examples from adolescent survey data to illustrate models of individual change over time. Seminar: Statistical Collaboration: Working with Statisticians from Start to Finish, and Essentials of Data Management [Video] [MP3] [Handouts] Presenters: Kay Savik, MS; Olga Gurvich, MA Date: November 12, 2009 Description: This presentation focused on the first meeting with a statistician; responsibilities of statistician vs. investigator; making decisions on the type of analyses; overview of database set-up and choice of software; IDs, names, format and codebooks; and data security. Seminar: Reporting Adverse Events: What, When, How? [Video] [MP3] [Handouts] Presenter: Cynthia R. Gross, PhD Date: December 3, 2009 Description: This presentation included a description of current approaches for monitoring and classifying adverse events in drug, device, and behavioral clinical trials. Seminar: Comparative Effectiveness Research [Video] [MP3] [Handouts] Presenter: Shalini Kulasingam, PhD Date: January 21, 2010 Description: This presentation included an overview of Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER), and discussed why there is a need for CER, priority CER topics, study designs for conducting CER, and examples of CER studies. Seminar: Preliminary Work Supporting an R01 Research Grant [Video] [MP3] [Handouts] Presenter: Donna Bliss, PhD Date: February 17, 2010 Description: This presentation included a review of aspects of preliminary work and their contributions to proposals per previous proposal instructions and page limits; examined review comments regarding preliminary work of recently funded grants; examined current criteria used for review of NIH grants, and discussed the role and use of preliminary work given criteria, new instructions, and new page limits. Seminar: Health Over Time: Longitudinal Design and Models in Nursing Research Presenters: Melissa Avery, PhD; Tondi Harrison, PhD; Patricia Painter, PhD [Video] [MP3] [Handouts] Date: March 25, 2010 Description: This presentation included pilot investigators describing their P20 pilot study projects: Dr. Melissa Avery focused on exercise interventions for gestational diabetes management in American Indian women; Dr. Tondi Harrison focused on evaluation of kangaroo care for newborns with congenital heart disease; and Dr. Patricia Painter focused on exercise interventions for wound healing in people with end-stage renal disease. Henly, PhD Date: September 24, 2008 Description: This presentation included a discussion on understanding growth, stability and decline in health status, and statistical description of health trajectories.

Seminar: Meeting the Challenge of Chronic Care [Handouts] [Video] Presenter: Robert Kane, MD Date: October 22, 2008 Description: This presentation included definitions around health care that change with a chronic disease context; areas of practice that could be changed to improve chronic disease care; and barriers to achieving better chronic disease care. Seminar: Revising & Resubmitting an NIH R01 Application: Exercise Training to Reduce Claudication: Arm Ergometry versus Treadmill Walking [Handouts] [MP3] [Video] Presenter: Diane Treat-Jacobson, PhD Date: November 19, 2008 Description: This presentation summarized the process of designing and submitting an R01; reviewing the summary statements; and revising and re-submitting the grant.
Seminar: Consent & Assent Issues Common to Vulnerable Populations Across the Lifespan [Handouts] [MP3] [Video] Presenters: Jeffery P. Perkey & Andrew Allen, IRB Research Subjects' Protection Programs Date: December 10, 2008 Descripion: This presentation included history of research using vulnerable populations, federal regulations and policies, principles of consent and assent, guidelines of inclusion of children, considerations when defining 'vulnerable', and the consent process. Seminar: Keeping the Passion Alive: Making the Right Turn [Handouts] [MP3] [Video] Presenter: Geraldine Padilla, PhD, Associate Dean for Research and Professor, UCSF, School of Nursing Date: February 19, 2009 Description: This presentation included a discussion on when changing one's career is necessary to keep the ideas sparking, creative juices flowing, and passion for discovery energized. Changing from a focus on quality of life outcomes in adults with cancer to studying hepatitis B inoculation of newborns in the Philippines was challenging and rewarding. Seminar: Quality of Life: What Are We Measuring? [Handouts] [MP3] [Video] Presenter: Geraldine Padilla, PhD, Associate Dean for Research and Professor, UCSF, School of Nursing Date: February 20, 2009 Description: This presentation included a discussion on quality of life (QOL) as a key outcome measure of short- and long-term impact of disease, treatment, style of care, and all manner of personal, social, environmental, and medical factors. Focus was on determining whether QOL instruments do a good job of measuring well-being in diverse groups, across cultures, and throughout the illness trajectory.
Seminar: Using the Trajectory Perspective to Advance Nursing Science [Handouts] [MP3] [Video] Presenters: Roberta Jorgensen, Rozina Bhimani, Jill Guttormson, Sarah Stoddard, PhD Candidates in Nursing, and Susan J. Henly, PhD Date: March 12, 2009 Description: This presentation by nursing PhD students included a description of patterns over time related to fatigue in chronic liver disease, spasticity in upper motor neuron disease, sedation during intervention care with ventilator support, and hopelessness among adolescents living in poverty. The speakers commented on advancement of nursing science using the health trajectory perspective and methods. Seminar: How Early Is Early? Examples from a program of research were used to illustrate these issues.
