Developing a Comprehensive Staffing Program

What does the word "staffing" mean to you?

Does it mean having enough nursing staff on a daily basis? Such as: "The staffing on Unit 1 is good today."

Does it mean that there aren't enough workers to hire for vacant positions? Such as: "Staffing is a big problem in our facility - we have so few applicants applying for jobs."

first graduates of the School of Nursing, class of 1912Is it defined by pre-established staffing ratios? Such as: "Staffing on the evening shift is 40 residents to 1 licensed nurse and 10 residents to 1 nursing assistant."

This 5-lesson course will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the components of a Framework for Nurse Staffing in Long-term Care Facilities. It will also enable you to develop a staffing program for your nursing facility using the Framework.

Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:

  1. Describe the components of a nurse staffing framework for long-term care nursing facilities.
  2. Explain how the values and beliefs of a nursing department and standards of care subscribed to by the nursing department can be integrated into the development, implementation, and evaluation of a nurse staffing framework.
  3. Use a case-mix classification system to identify the nursing care needs of residents and corresponding nursing resources to meet those needs.
  4. Create staffing schedules which balance the needs of residents and the needs of the nursing staff.
  5. Specify strategies for allocating the nursing work to meet the needs of residents.
  6. Identify contextual factors that can affect the development and implementation of a comprehensive staffing program.
  7. Describe strategies to evaluate the effectiveness of a staffing program for a long-term care facility.

Professional Continuing Education Contact Hours: 6

Continuing education contact hours are awarded on successful completion of this 6-hour course. The course must be completed within 3 months of registration. Upon completion of the course, a final quiz and course survey must be completed and submitted to receive the continuing education contact hours.

Course Fee: $60.00

  • You need a computer with an internet connection and the Netscape 4.75 browser. Also be aware that you may need to adjust your browser Preference settings to run WebCT. Recommended computer system and browser configurations are outlined at WebCT Browser Set Up.
  • The University recommends the browser Netscape 4.75 for best performance with WebCT. If you do not have this software installed on your computer, the link will take you to the site to download the browser free of charge.(WebCT, Inc. does not support use of Netscape 6 or Internet Explorer. Problems encountered are javascript errors and frequent crashes.)
  • Some of the course readings are available in Portable Document Format (PDF) which can be accessed with the Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you do not have the necessary software installed on your computer, the link will take you to the site to download the reader free of charge.
  • Other applications needed to access course materials are a word processing program such as Microsoft Word and a spread sheet program such as Microsoft Excel.
