Module 2 Title: Family Health Nursing

Purpose and Description
This presentation will describe the formation of the Family Health Model. It will also examine contextual and functional aspects of family health, and how routines can assist health care needs.

Objectives of the Module On completion of this assessment, you will:

  • Identify 3-4 characteristics of the contextual aspects of family health.
  • Describe 2-3 components of the functional aspects of family health.
  • Discuss the ways family routines provide a way to discuss prevention, health promotion, and health maintenance.

Target Audience

This module is appropriate for nurses, social workers, physicians and psychologists, and public health and health care professionals who are involved in the care and treatment of children.

Learning Methods

This web-based instructional module was created using Flash technology. Features include graphics, interactive questions, hyperlinks, video and narration. For your convenience the module has been formatted in short time frames. For successful completion and to receive your certificate, you are required to view all module components.

  • Segment 3: Family Health Nursing 3 (47.22 minutes)

Registration
To meet our grant reporting requirements, we ask all users to complete a post-module evaluation Form. All fields are required in order to receive Continuing Education contact hours.  After you complete the registration, you will be sent a certificate by email.  We ask that you bookmark the course listing page if you will need to stop before completing the module.  There is no fee for these modules.

System Requirements
To complete these modules, your web browser should support streaming video. Internet Explorer version 7 or higher, or Firefox version 2.0 or higher is sufficient.

Requirements for Successful Completion and Certificate:

  • Watch the module segment presentations.
  • Complete the module evaluation.

Following the successful completion of the learning module you will be asked to complete a module evaluation. Elect either the certificate for American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or Minnesota Board of Nursing (MN BON) credit. Print the certificate for your records.

Note: If you need a generic certificate of completion for your professional organization, select the Minnesota Certificate. Contact hours are calculated based on module review, assessments, exercises and required readings (as appropriate). Readings are calculated via words per page with an estimated time formula for each required reading and/or website.

Accreditation Statements:
Each module is assigned contact hours based on the content and evaluation.

American Nurses Credentialing Center
University of Minnesota School of Nursing, Office of Practice, Business and Professional Development is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. This program is awarded 1.9 contact hours.

Minnesota Board of Nursing
This program is designed to meet the Minnesota Board of Nursing requirements for continuing education. It is the responsibility of the individual nurse to determine if the course fulfills that requirement. This program expires 2 years from date completed. It is the responsibility of the individual nurse to determine if the course fulfills your State Board of Nursing requirement. Please check with your Board to insure appropriate credit. This program is awarded 2.3 contact hours.

Other Healthcare Providers
It is the responsibility of each participant to determine if the program meets the criteria for licensure or recertification for their discipline. Each participant will receive a certificate of attendance. Please check with your accrediting organization for complete requirements.

Author Bio-sketch and Credentials

Sharon Denham, RN, DSN, is a professor at Ohio University's School of Nursing and teaches both undergraduate and graduate students. Her major areas of focus have been nursing education, family nursing and community health. Sharon is the author of the Family Health Model and has given numerous local, state, national, and international professional presentations. She is active professionally in several professional nursing organizations and has served on the Board of Commissioner's for the National League of Nursing Accreditation Commission. Currently, Sharon chairs the Family and Health Section of the National Council on Family Relations. She has been involved for many years with the Appalachian Studies Association. At Ohio University she serves as the Director of the Appalachian Rural Health Institute. Sharon has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals pertaining to her research and has also written a textbook entitled Family Health: A Framework for Nursing, a conceptual model for practice. She is well recognized for her knowledge about health and related cultural concerns of those living in the Appalachian region. Finally, her current research and scholarship is focused on Type 2 Diabetes, but in the past she has published findings on family health, abuse and violence, alcohol and tobacco use in Appalachian populations.
