Connecting with Children

Module 1 Connecting with Children - The Therapeutic Interview and Teaching Self Regulation Skills.

Purpose and Description: Session one will assist you in developing the techniques to effectively interview a child; understanding their views and concerns; and identifying how children can learn self care techniques. Session two demonstrates how to teach children positive self regulation skills.

Objectives of the Module: On completion of this assessment, you will:

The Therapeutic Interview (segments 1 & 2):

  • Utilize effective, age-appropriate language to elicit the child's perspective of a presenting concern.
  • Develop interviewing skills that demonstrate recognition of a child's capacity to learn self-care.

Teaching Self-Regulation Skills (segments 3, 4 & 5):

  • Utilize language to assist a child in learning relaxation techniques.
  • Identify encouraging messages to substitute for discouraging self-talk messages.

Target Audience: Nurses, public health, social workers, physicians and psychologists and health care professionals who are involved in the care and treatment of children.

Learning Methods:

These web-based instructional modules were created using Flash technology. Features include graphics, interactive questions, hyperlinks, video and narration.

Teaching Self-Regulation Skills (segments 3, 4 & 5):
- Segment 3: Therapeutic Interview 1
- Segment 4: Therapeutic Interview 2
- Segment 5: Therapeutic Interview 3

Registration
To meet our grant reporting requirements, we ask all users to complete a post-module evaluation Form. All fields are required in order to receive Continuing Education contact hours.  After you complete the registration, you will be sent a certificate by email.  We ask that you bookmark the course listing page if you will need to stop before completing the module.  There is no fee for these modules.

System Requirements
To complete these modules, your web browser should support streaming video. Internet Explorer version 7 or higher, or Firefox version 2.0 or higher is sufficient.

Requirements for Successful Completion and Certificate:

  • Watch the module segment presentations.
  • Complete the module evaluation.

Following the successful completion of the learning module you will be asked to complete a module evaluation. Elect either the certificate for American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or Minnesota Board of Nursing (MN BON) credit. Print the certificate for your records.

Note: If you need a generic certificate of completion for your professional organization, select the Minnesota Certificate. Contact hours are calculated based on module review, assessments, exercises and required readings (as appropriate). Readings are calculated via words per page with an estimated time formula for each required reading and/or website.

Accreditation Statements:
Each module is assigned contact hours based on the content and evaluation.

American Nurses Credentialing Center
University of Minnesota School of Nursing, Office of Practice, Business and Professional Development is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. This program is awarded 1.9 contact hours.

Minnesota Board of Nursing
This program is designed to meet the Minnesota Board of Nursing requirements for continuing education. It is the responsibility of the individual nurse to determine if the course fulfills that requirement. This program expires 2 years from date completed. It is the responsibility of the individual nurse to determine if the course fulfills your State Board of Nursing requirement. Please check with your Board to insure appropriate credit. This program is awarded 2.3 contact hours.

Other Healthcare Providers
It is the responsibility of each participant to determine if the program meets the criteria for licensure or recertification for their discipline. Each participant will receive a certificate of attendance. Please check with your accrediting organization for complete requirements.

Author Bio-sketch and Credentials:
Rebecca Kajander , BSN, MPH, CNP worked for 17 years as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in primary care, specializing in behavioral issues in children and for 17 years as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at the Alexander Center for Child Development, specializing in behavioral and developmental issues in children. She has special interest in ADHD and all co-morbid concerns and psychophysiological problems. Additionally.she is trained in hypnotherapy, biofeedback and relaxation methods. Rebecca has been a local and national speaker on topics including ADHD, stress in children, behavior problems and self-regulation training. Finally, she has published in review journals and has authored one book on ADHD and co-authored three books on self-regulation training for children.
