Frequently Asked Questions

When is the application deadline?
The application deadline is always February 1st, for the following Fall start.

Do you have a Spring admission?
We only have the one time enrollment every year, which is always for Fall.

What are your admission statistics?
Typically, we receive over 500 applicants and we have around 130 spots available in the program, 100 spots for the Twin Cities applicants and 30 for Rochester. The average prerequisite and cumulative GPA is a generally around a 3.6.

How competitive is the program?
This is a very competitive program however, admissions is based on a holistic review which means we take into consideration many other factors other then just the GPA, when reviewing an applicant we first look to see that you have met the minimum eligibility requirements, we then look over the essay portion of the application very closely, we also look for any experience you may already have in the health care field like maybe volunteering in a hospital setting, maybe getting your nursing assistant license, etc. this experience is not a requirement but will help over your competition and then of course your educational background.

What are the eligibility requirements?
At the time of application you must have completed or have in progress at least five of the six college-level/college credit prerequisites listed in the application, with the ability to complete all six prerequisites (seven for Rochester applicants) before entering the program in September.
-You must also have completed at least one natural or physical science course, (either microbiology or chemistry) with an A-F grade. They must have been taken within 10 years before admission.
-Must have an cumulative college GPA of at least 2.80
-Must have an cumulative prerequisite GPA of at least 2.80, with at least four courses (completed or in progress) taken A-F.
-English language proficiency, if applicable: TOEFL score of at least 240 on the computerized version, 95 on the Web version (iBT), or 586 on the paper version.

I am a transfer student. What do I need to do?
Transfer students must complete:

  1. 1) an application for admission through the U of M Office of Admissions
  2. 2) the School of Nursing application

by the February deadline.

I have attended the U in the past or am currently enrolled on another campus. Do I need to reapply?
No. Previous U of M students should complete the Change of College form in addition to the School of Nursing application. Students currently enrolled at UMD, UMC, and UMM must also complete the Change of College form. Please note: Student who are currently or who have been previously enrolled in the College of Continuing Education as non-degree seeking students must also complete an Undergraduate Application.

How will my credits transfer?
Prerequisite coursework must:

  1. 1) be transferable to the University of Minnesota,
  2. 2) fulfill the minimum credit requirements,
  3. 3) have the same or similar course title and description,
  4. 4) meet the timeline requirements.

Please note that you can complete the prerequisites at another academic institution or in another school or college at the University of Minnesota, and then transfer to the School of Nursing for the final three years.

Can I complete the program in fewer than 3 years?
No. The program is highly structured. Everyone is admitted as a sophomore and must complete all courses during the designated semester
