Faculty Updates
Fang Yu, PhD, GNP-BC, RN was the 2011 Springer Award in Geriatric/Gerontological Nursing Recipient. Dr. Yu's co-authored 2010 article is a significant contribution to the field of gerontological nursing: Correlating heart rate and perceived exertion during aerobic exercise in Alzheimer's disease. Nursing and Health Sciences, 12, 375-380.
Dr. Yu received the Springer Award at the Gerontology Society of America's Annual Conference on Saturday, November 19, 2011.
Bonnie Westra, PhD, RN, FAAN was inducted as a fellow in the American College of Medical Informatics at the Annual Symposium in Washington D.C. on October 23, 2011.
Kristine Talley, PhD, RN, GNP-BC, received funding from the National Institute on Aging for her project “Restorative Care’s Effect on Disability in Long-Stay Nursing Home Residents.” This innovative study is the first to use a nationally representative sample of nursing home residents’ Minimum Data Set (MDS) data linked to the 2004 National Nursing Home Survey, available through the National Center for Health Statistics, to analyze current restorative care practice.
In addition, Dr. Talley was awarded an Academic Health Center Seed Grant for her project “Developing a Multicomponent Intervention to Prevent Toileting Disabilities in Frail Older Women Living in Assisted Living Facilities.” Also, she was recently awarded a 1-year pilot grant for her study “Preventing Toileting Disabilities in Frail Older Women” from the Iowa Hartford Center for Geriatric Nursing Excellence.
Professor Kristine Talley, PhD, RN, GNP-BC and Jean Wyman, PhD, RN, GNP-BC, FAAN, FGSA co-authored an article entitled “State of the Science: Conservative Interventions for Urinary Incontinence in Frail Community-Dwelling Older Adults” that appeared in a special issue of Nursing Outlook published in July 2011. The special issue was dedicated to geriatric nursing, including the crucial role of nursing in building better-prepared workforce and advancing geriatric education.
Niloufar Hadidi, PhD, CNS, APRN, BC, 2007-2008 MNHCGNE Scholar and John A. Hartford Foundation Claire M. Fagin Fellow was chosen as the GAPNA Excellence in Research Award recipient for 2011. This award was presented to Dr. Hadidi on September 16, 2011 at the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association Conference in Washington, D.C.
Merrie Kaas, PhD, RN, FAAN was inducted as a Fellow into the American Academy of Nursing at their annual meeting in Washington D.C. in October 2011. Fellows in the Academy are recognized as nursing's most accomplished leaders in education, management, practice and research.
Christine Mueller, PhD, RN, FAAN was inducted as a Fellow into the Health Sciences Section of the Gerontological Society of America at their annual meeting in Boston, MA on November 18 - 22, 2011.
The University of Minnesota School of Nursing was a co-recipient of the 2011 BSN Award for Innovative Clinical Rotation in a Nursing Home from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing in collaboration with the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing and the Pioneer Network. This award recognizes a baccalaureate school of nursing that has created an innovative clinical rotation in a nursing home. The University of MInnesota School of Nursing has been a national leader in geriatric nursing education and specifically, in clinical teaching in nursing homes. Under the leadership of Christine Mueller, PhD, RN, FAAN, the clinical experiences designed for students in nursing homes have served as a national model and further recognized upon receiving a 3 year grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to implement a 4-state faculty development program to increase faculty's capacity to develop and implement exemplary clinical experiences in nursing homes. Faculty at the University of Minnesota that have done the clinical teaching in nursing homes, as well as serve on the HRSA grant include Mary Goering, MS, RN; Mary Zaccagnini, DNP, RN; Kristine Talley, PhD, RN, GNP-BC and Fang Yu, PhD, RN, GNP-BC.
